As Clough paid tribute to City's attacking quintet of Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez, Leroy Sané, Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva, Guardiola referenced Clough's late father, Brian, who is considered one of the greatest domestic managers.

Ahead of the first leg of the tie on Wednesday night, Clough spoke to the media, and made comparisons between the respective draws against the Manchester clubs.

'Players like me want to play more, to help the team, and we went out there to win'.

It's not unthinkable that City could win an unprecedented quadruple this season and continue their domination of the English game, whilst Burton look to have a task on them to even make the League One playoffs.

He scored a first-half brace to hand the Gunners a 2-0 lead at the halftime interval before Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi added a third goal in the second half.

Jesus sent a low strike wide of the far post but with half an hour played City had a second, Sane's effort blocked by the goalkeeper and looping up for Jesus to head home.

Gonzalo HIGUAIN close to leaving AC Milan and joining Chelsea
Gonzalo Higuain has been told by sporting director Leonardo to show responsibility for AC Milan and decide his future at the club. Higuain played under Sarri at Napoli in 2015-16, and enjoyed the most productive season of his career with 38 goals in 42 games.

"The only way is to take it seriously".

As is common in the competition, Guardiola has used the League Cup to give his full squad a run-out. "The best way is do what we have to do".

There were no complaints from Burton boss Nigel Clough, who could do little more than hold up his hands following Manchester City's 9-0 victory, which renders the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final all but meaningless.

"I think this one over two legs", said Clough, when asked to compare which was the tougher challenge.

"We didn't play brilliantly and a couple of the goals we were disappointed with, as we should have defended them better, but the gulf in quality was very evident and the players came in at half-time and were wide eyed with what they have played against". And we stopped them, that's a positive for us. "They won't be overawed, they'll go there to do a job and hope that we can get a reasonable result". We wished we could get 10, maybe next time'. The Reds reached the final but lost to Arsenal.
