Thibodeau, 60, led the Timberwolves to the playoffs a year ago for the first time since 2004, but are just 19-21 on the season, including 5-15 on the road. "We all have a lot of confidence in him", Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns said. "These decisions are never easy to make, but we felt necessary to move our organization forward".

The babyface Saunders is set to make his National Basketball Association head coaching debut tonight when the Timberwolves head south to take on Paul George, Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

News came out late Sunday that the Timberwolves were firing Thibodeau, who was in the middle of his third season as the team's head coach and president.

Assistant coach Ryan Saunders will assume the role of the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2018-19 season.

"After the trade happened, there was little bit of energy and life in the team", Minneapolis Star-Tribune Timberwolves writer Chris Hine said on Ferrall on the Bench.

Per the report, several of the team's current assistants from the previous regime have already been asked to remain with the team. Stefanski was the only known candidate to receive a second interview, which came on Tuesday January 8.

"The results are that I don't think we should've lost against Phoenix or Detroit or New Orleans or Atlanta", Taylor said.

"I think all of this was kind of a critical mass for (Timberwolves owner) Glen Taylor to say, 'Something is just not working here". And I've talked to him before and after practice. "It's just not", Rose said. The Wolves are said to be in search for a long-term candidate for the coaching job, and Wojnarowski reports that former Chicago Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg and ESPN analyst Chauncey Billups are considered for the vacancy. "Maybe one of those games".

"Layden and Minnesota CEO Ethan Casson walked into Thibodeau's office and fired him after the victory over the Lakers, league sources told ESPN".

Thibodeau was also the head coach of the Bulls from 2011-15, where he compiled a 255-139 record.

The Timberwolves will face the Thunder in Oklahoma City on Tuesday.
