Speaking about the duchess's work supporting various animal rescue centres in her home city of Los Angeles, Ms Yates added: "The duchess has spent many years championing animal welfare, and we are honoured to have our charity represented by such a passionate patron".

National Theatre director Rufus Norris said: "I would like to thank the Queen for Her Majesty's long and unwavering support and service to the National Theatre".

Meghan will become Patron of The National Theatre and The Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Kate Middleton, Markle's sister-in-law, received her first royal patronage for the Royal Foundation in October 2011, six months after she tied the knot with Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.

The Duchess of Sussex joked self-deprecatingly with Lady Juliet Hughes-Hallett, a former editor of Vogue UK, about the incident.

The National Theatre confirmed the Duchess had met privately with the director of the National Rufus Norris at the theatre previous year, and is expected to carry out a public visit at the theatre at some point in the next few weeks.
