McLachlan is due to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on February 8.

A spokesman for McLachlan told local media, "Craig is innocent of these charges which will be vigorously defended". He has commenced legal action against the SMH, The Age, the ABC and Christie Whelan Browne, who alleged McLachlan inappropriately touched her during an onstage Rocky Horror sex scene. McLachlan was sacked from the upcoming Rocky Horror Show production and also from the ABC's The Doctor Blake Mysteries.

The charges coincide with the actor's time working on the Rocky Horror Show musical - where he played the lead role of Dr Frank-N-Furter -in Melbourne in 2014.

McLachlan is seeking $6.5 million in special damages, and his defamation hearing is set down for four weeks from February 4.
