It's also a total lunar eclipse, with the moon covered by Earth's shadow and taking on a red glow - hence the name blood moon.

If the skies are clear, the eclipse will be visible from anywhere in North America, according to the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.

LOCAL folk are being urged to look to the heavens to see a rare blood Moon eclipse.

The blood moon part happens when the bright moon creeps directly through the Earth's shadow, causing it to turn to gold, copper or even a dark red. This lunar eclipse from a year ago is a super blue blood moon that showed up in the sky in Phoenix, Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018.

Native Americans and colonial Europeans called January's full moon the wolf moon because wolves in the region would start howling due to hunger in winter, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac.

As you can see in the map below, all of North and South America as well as UK, Ireland, Greenland, Portugal, some parts of Spain, France, and Norway, and Iceland will get to full lunar eclipse. This Sunday night, January 20, there will be another celestial phenomenon: a total lunar eclipse.

Technically, this lunar eclipse will also appear larger than other, non-supermoon eclipses, but the casual observer may struggle to tell a difference. What makes this special is the fact that it is a supermoon and a total lunar eclipse.

He was also using Eratosthenes' calculation for the circumference of the almost spherical Earth to derive his distances.

A lunar eclipse or chandra grahan occurs when the Moon passes directly behind Earth and into its shadow.

While the lunar event is happening, football fans watching or attending the AFC Championship game between the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs may be able to spot the eclipse. That is because the reduced amount of sunlight which reaches the moon is scattered by the Earth's atmosphere.

You can go outside and see it for yourself, too, as long as the clouds do not come in too strong.

The moment of greatest eclipse, when the moon is deepest in Earth's shadow, will occur at 12:16 a.m. EST (9:16 p.m. PST).

Okere who is also the Acting Director, Centre for Basic Space Science (CBSS) Nsukka said some people still attach spiritual meanings to eclipse which was not so.
