Bill will not harm NE’s interests, assures Modi

Hours after China expressed its displeasure over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Arunachal Pradesh, Ministry of External Affairs asserted that the state of Arunachal Pradesh is an "integral and inalienable part" of India. It looks at giving constitutional safeguards to indigenous Assamese people against alleged illegal migrants from Bangladesh.

A year ago the Assam government released the first draft of a state citizens' register that rejected 4 million mainly Muslim residents who were unable to prove they were living in the state before 1971, when millions fled Bangladesh's war of independence.

"Our members will protest by showing black flags at different places tomorrow (Saturday)".

He accused opposition political parties, especially the Congress, of fuelling protest against the bill through a misinformation campaign.

"Only after necessary investigation and recommendation of the state government can the decision of giving someone citizenship be taken". "The bill is against the spirit of our Constitution", the statement said. "New India can only be built if North East can be developed well", he added.

Modi will halt overnight in Guwahati, before travelling to Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday morning.

Visiting the northeast for the first time after the bill was passed by Lok Sabha on January 8, Modi crisscrossed Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Tripura during the day and unveiled several projects.Though Modi sought to assuage fears in Assam and the northeast over the bill, in Meghalaya BJP's coalition partner National Peoples Party (NPP) threatened to quit the NDA if the proposed legislation is passed in Rajya Sabha.

He was addressing a public rally here in the assembly constituency of Assam health minister and BJP-led NEDA convener Himata Biswa Sarma.
