Google Pixel is now the United States' fastest-growing smartphone brand

Aside from having a normal and an XL model, it seems that Google isn't really a fan of having two of something.

The dual SIM support is interesting for a couple of reasons. According to a report by XDA Developers, recent commits to Android Open Source Project's (AOSP) Gerrit, Google "will be adding property values in the framework and Telephony service to tell if a device has hardware support for multiSIM functionality". Android Q is coming later this year, and it's a certainty to be included on the Pixel 4 in the fall. Pixel 3 offers what is called the Dual SIM, Single Standby (DSSS). Like Apple's newest iPhone, those Pixel phones have a tray for one SIM card while the second is provided by an eSIM. While the phone will allow the eSIM to connect to many supported carriers, neither of the phones allow the physical SIM or eSIM to be used at the same time.

The second, Dual SIM, Dual Standby (DSDS), allows a phone to receive calls and texts from the secondary SIM as long as the phone isn't actively using the primary SIM for the same objective. This means that even though you can have two SIMs operating on two different networks, you will not be able to receive calls or texts to the inactive SIM slot. You'll have to switch between the two networks to receive calls and messages from the respective network.

Moreover, there was a comment left by a Googler in one of the commits stating that the 2019 Pixel will have dual SIM functionality. You aren't required to purchase two identical phones to take advantage of the promotion, any combination of Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL phones will work regardless of their storage capacity. Just as interesting, however, is the note that the Pixel 3 does have that as well but is limited to internal testing.

The October 2018 release of Google's Pixel 3 smartphones remains fresh in the memory.
