Microsoft to Nag Windows 7 Users to Upgrade

To deal with the inevitable botched installs before you start angry-tweeting, Microsoft's added a new capability to Windows 10 that makes it automatically uninstall any update that's preceded a failed startup. Windows Updates which fail dues to software incompatibilities will get automatically uninstalled.

Rather than leaving it down to users to seek out the problematic update and uninstall it, Windows 10 could start to automatically uninstall updates that have caused issues.

The support document is aptly titled "Why were recently installed updates removed?".

Of course, Windows Updates should be fixing problems, not creating them, which is probably why Microsoft has very quietly rolled out this feature.

To remain secure, you'll have to upgrade your OS to either Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 to continue receiving security updates from Microsoft every month.

In the ongoing saga of trying to mitigate the potential problems caused by speculative execution exploits like Spectre and Meltdown (and the fixes to those fixes) Microsoft has a new Windows patch called KB4482887.

So, you've spent your life savings on a mammoth rig; everything runs butter-smooth; and bam, you're hit with a crippling Windows 10 update that brings your gaming performance to a crawl. After 30 days, Windows will again try to install the updates. The notifications won't pollute your Action Center and dismissing them in the app will also dismiss them on the connected Windows 10 devices.

If you ever end up in this situation, Microsoft also explained that Windows 10 will also prevent the automatic installation of "problematic updates" for the next 30 days to give the company some time to investigate any issues. This is only done when all other automatic recovery attempts have been unsuccessful.
