It's part of the carmaker's restructuring plan, one which won't have any effect on its Eastern Europe, Middle East and Asian operations.

So far this year Infiniti's sales are down almost 11 percent to 20,909 units in the United States.

It intends to have a fully electrified range of vehicles in these markets by 2021.

"Plant management will discuss any impact on the plant with employees and their representatives", the statement said. It will still have a presence in terms of service, maintenance and warranty repairs, although it's unclear if they'll be Infiniti-branded centers or something else.

Infiniti has 51 employees in its western Europe operations.

Nissan to end Sunderland production of luxury Infiniti brand

Infiniti showrooms will close within 12 months and production of the Q30 and QX30 at Nissan's Sunderland plant will cease in the summer. The Nissan-owned automaker said it's working to find other jobs for employees that might be affected, and once that's done, it'll focus on ending franchise agreements.

A spokesman said that the targets could be met by Infiniti, like any other auto maker, with investment in electrified technology, but there was no viable way of the company to do so.

Unite said it would be seeking assurances on future employment and was confident of securing redeployment opportunities for the 200 plus workers affected.

A Government spokesperson told This is Money: 'As Infiniti has said, this is a global commercial decision to withdraw from Western Europe to focus on Infiniti's growth market in North America and China.

'Nissan has reiterated its commitment to the United Kingdom and its workforce by continuing to manufacture in Sunderland the current Qashqai, Leaf and Juke models, as well as the new Qashqai model'.
