Lanny Davis, one of Cohen's lawyers, admitted that Cohen "directed his attorney" to ask about a possible pardon.

The House Oversight Committee chairman on Wednesday rejected Republican calls for a new investigation into President Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen and whether he again lied to Congress.

But Cohen, in his closed-door congressional testimony, handed over the emails to back his claim that a pardon was dangled before he chose to cooperate with the feds, the network reported, citing sources.

They said federal prosecutors in NY say Cohen sought employment in the Trump administration - something Cohen repeatedly denied in the hearing.

The Democratic chairman of the House Oversight Committee said Wednesday that he will not attempt to punish Michael Cohen for misleading the committee last month when he claimed he'd never asked President Trump for a pardon.

Trump himself challenged that claim. Cohen, in his own tweet, responded, calling the president's assertion "another set of lies".

But the new letter from Monico is unlikely to satisfy Republicans, who have charged Cohen may have committed perjury in his testimony.

"This Committee can not stand idly by when a witness comes to a hearing, swears an oath to testify truthfully, and provides material testimony that appears on its face to be demonstrably false", Jordan and Meadows wrote to Cummings, a Maryland Democrat.

Cummings said he did not "see the need for further action - at least at this time".

In Tuesday's letter, an attorney for Cohen said his testimony about not seeking a pardon referred to the period after Cohen made a decision to break from Trump in June 2018 and left their joint defense agreement.

Costello told CNN that he brought up the possibility of Cohen receiving a pardon even though he believed the matter to be premature.

A lawyer told Michael Cohen in an email in April 2018 that he can "sleep well" because he has "friends in high places", following an alleged "back channel" communication with President Trump's attorney Rudy Giuliani, where the pardon issue was raised, a report said.

Two, while he was acting attorney general, Mr. Whitaker was directly involved in conversations about whether to fire one or more US attorneys.

"Our practice on this Committee is to give witnesses an opportunity to clarify their testimony, and that is what Mr. Cohen has done", Cummings said.

Nadler said after the public testimony that his answers were 'unsatisfactory, incomplete or contradicted by other evidence.' In the letter sent to the Justice Department, Nadler said Whitaker didn't offer clear responses about his communications with the White House and was inconsistent about what questions he refused to answer.
