People from 35 countries died in the Sunday morning crash six minutes after the plane took off from Ethiopia's capital en route to Nairobi.

A previous photo caption incorrectly identified the aircraft in the photo as an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8, the same model of the airplane in Monday's crash.

The crash comes as Ethiopian has been snapping up stakes in small carriers around the continent to pre-empt potential rivals and become the dominant pan-African airline.

The aviation authority will contact the US Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing, it said.

"The pilot mentioned that he had difficulties and that he wanted to return", Tewolde told a news conference. "Where are you, my son?" she said, in tears. Among those were seven staffers of the World Food Programme; six staff from the U.N. Office in Nairobi; two each from the Office of the High Commissioner on Refugees and the International Telecommunications Union; and one each from the Food and Agriculture Organization, International Organization for Migration in Sudan, World Bank, and UN Assistance Mission in Somalia.

Safety experts cautioned against drawing too many comparisons between the two crashes until more is known.

Now, a list issued by the airline indicates there was one Ugandan, 32 Kenyans, 18 Canadians, 6 Egyptians, 9 Ethiopians, 7 French, 8 Americans and 7 Britons among the dead.

Google's Gmail and Drive suffer global outages
According to a message posted on Google's GSuite Status Dashboard , Gmail is reportedly experiencing a "service disruption". Google has not yet addressed the issue but some users have reported that some services are being restored.

The crash was strikingly similar to that of a Lion Air jet of the same Boeing model in Indonesian seas a year ago, killing 189 people.

Airlines in Ethiopia, China, Indonesia and elsewhere grounded the Boeing 737 Max 8 jetliner Monday after the second devastating crash of one of the planes in five months. "The villagers said that it was a plane crash, and we rushed to the site".

The company has delivered 76 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to Chinese airlines, which have ordered another 104, according to data from the aircraft maker's website updated through January.

Caribbean airline Cayman Airways said it would also temporarily ground its two 737 Max 8 planes.

The jet's last maintenance was on February 4, and it had flown just 1,200 hours.

Sunday's crash comes as the country's reformist prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, has vowed to open up the airline and other sectors to foreign investment in a major transformation of the state-centered economy.
