Multiple casualties reported in shooting at mosque in New Zealand`s Christchurch

Ibrahim said he had heard reports from a friend that a gunman had opened fire at another mosque in the area.

Bangladesh's cricket team escaped unscathed after a shooting at a mosque in central Christchurch, New Zealand, an official told AFP on Friday (March 15).

Police Commissioner Mike Bush told reporters he was mobilizing "every national police resource to keep people safe" as he advised residents of Christchurch to stay off the streets.

"Police are responding with its full capability to manage the situation, but the risk environment remains extremely high", they tweeted.

Gunshots have been heard near a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, local media report, as police warn of a "critical incident".

Radio New Zealand quoted a witness inside the mosque saying he heard shots fired and at least four people were lying on the ground and "there was blood everywhere".

The entire Bangladesh cricket team present at the site was just saved from the incident.

Police did not immediately comment on whether the incident took place in the mosque or nearby.

A number of local schools are also in a state of lockdown as people are urged not to travel within the vicinity of the city centre.

Bangladesh is scheduled play Test against New Zealand in Christchurch on Saturday.

"Alhamdulillah Allah save us today while shooting in Christchurch in the mosque", tweeted another player, Mushfiqur Rahim.

New Zealand police are treating it as an active shooter situation. One person is in custody, however Police believe there may be other offenders.

A man in the mosque at the time, who would not give his name, said there were "bodies all over me".
