Brazil global Neymar watched from the stands at Parc des Princes as United claimed a 3-1 win in the second leg of their last-16 tie to progress to the quarter-finals on away goals.

United bounced back from a first-leg deficit to eliminate the French champions, with a controversial handball call from referee Damir Skomina awarding the Premier League side a stoppage-time penalty kick following a lengthy review by the VAR officials.

Neymar was so reportedly enraged by the decision to give the penalty that he had to be restrained by PSG staff to stop him entering their dressing room.

In a statement released on Wednesday afternoon, European football's governing body said it had "appointed an ethics and disciplinary inspector to conduct an investigation" into Neymar's comments. "It's not a penalty", wrote Neymar on Instagram.

If found guilty the 27-year-old risks being suspended during the early rounds of next year's Champions League, for which runaway Ligue 1 leaders PSG are certainties to qualify.

It is unknown what punishment would be considered for Neymar should he be found to have broken UEFA rules, but any enforced absence may not overly trouble the Parisian outfit, who now lead Ligue 1 by 17 points with 11 games to play in the 2018/19 domestic season.

Neymar missed both legs of the tie after injuring his foot in January.
