Nirav Modi arrested in London, to be produced in court shortly

A legal team is reported to be dealing with Modi's asylum application, though officially there is no confirmation of the application, given the Home Office's long-standing policy that "We would not routinely confirm nor deny whether an individual asylum claim has been lodged".

Early January 2018: Nirav Modi reportedly leaves India. The duo took loans from India's largest lending bank to finance overseas loans and expand their business. The court has also allowed the sale of 11 vehicles belonging to Modi after an application from the Enforcement Directorate.

January 29th, 2018: Punjab National Bank filed a complaint with the CBI alleging that Nirav Modi, his uncle Mehul Choksi and their associates had swindled the bank through transactions at its Brady House branch in Mumbai.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah tweeted on fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi's arrest and said, "It's amusing to see the BJP falling over itself to credit the prime minister with the Nirav Modi arrest while completely ignoring the fact that it was The Telegraph of London and it's correspondent who found Nirav Modi, not the prime minister and his agencies".

But now, as Modi and his lieutenants, who are all calling themselves chowkidaar, go to town with the #MainBhiChowkidaar campaign, Nirav Modi's arrest and the developments in Mallya's extradition case will add credibility to the promise of fighting corruption in high places.

While the request by the Indian government to help with the arrest of Modi was first issued previous year, he remained to be at large for a very long time. His wife Ami, a United States citizen, brother Nishal, a Belgian, and uncle Choksi, Gitanjali group's promoter, had also fled the country in the first week of January.

It would seem that his arrest is on an extradition warrant, details of which would become clear when he appears before Westminster Magistrates' Court in London.

Hence, it said, the extradition request for Modi could only be sent after a chargesheet was filed against him, which was done by the agency in May a year ago.

The Indian government on Wednesday sought a hearing in the extradition case of Nirav Modi within two weeks by a London Court, which fixed March 29 as the next date in the case.

"Nirav Deepak Modi was arrested on behalf of the Indian authorities this afternoon (Tuesday, 19 March) in Holborn".
