Obamacare's supporters point out that in addition to expanding healthcare coverage to millions of Americans, it has made it more affordable for many via subsidized coverage, and prevented insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions.

Sister Carol, who worked behind the scenes to craft the language of the ACA, which was passed in 2010 and took effect four years later, said the administration's support for the District Court's ruling is at the "expense of tens of millions of individuals' and families' lives and well-being" and would "detrimentally affect most Americans in our country". We're on our agenda, ' she said.

'The Department of Justice has determined that the district court's judgment should be affirmed, ' Assistant U.S. Attorney General Joseph Hunt and other federal officials wrote in the Monday letter.

Three months later the president is putting his administration's legal muscle where his mouth is.

The lawsuit was filed by NY and 10 other states. That echoes the sentiments of several legal experts across the ideological spectrum so said the Texas court ruling was based more in politics than legal precedent. "We now have a mandate without a penalty".

"When Democrats are setting themselves ablaze by advocating for the destruction of American health care, try to resist the temptation of asking them to pass the kerosene", tweeted Josh Holmes, a Republican consultant who previously served as chief of staff to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). The court has upheld the law twice.

Republican Senator Charles Grassley said, "We would have to act accordingly" if the Supreme Court dismantles Obamacare, but he noted there might not be any definitive court action until next year.

"That obviously hurt us last November because it was mischaracterized, but we can do a lot better job of taking care of pre-existing conditions", Wicker said.

Healthcare was the top issue in last year's mid-term elections, which swept Democrats to power in the House of Representatives. Many are advocating for the government to supplant private insurers with "universal" healthcare system.

One of the first moves Democrats made after regaining control of the House was intervening in the Texas lawsuit to rebut the claim brought by a coalition of 20 Republican-led states.

Democrats credit the fight over health care with helping them recapture the house. So this President's decision blind-sided some within the Republican Party.

While this case won't be resolved anytime soon, the Trump administration's decision to advocate for the end of the current system gives 2020 candidates an opportunity to hammer Republicans for being against the improvements Obamacare made to the U.S. healthcare system without a way of ensuring that whatever comes next will be better.
