According to health officials, the measles vaccine is highly effective and very safe. Measles vaccine, or other acceptable documentation of immunity to measles, is recommended for all persons travelling internationally.

People who should not get the vaccine include those who are pregnant, immune-compromised, or allergic to a component of the MMR vaccine, Ryan said. The last time the state had this many measles cases was in 1991 when 65 cases were reported. The best protection is to be vaccinated with MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine. It spreads either through direct contact with an infected person or through the air when the patient coughs or sneezes. Eyes may become reddened and sensitive to light while the fever gradually rises each day, often peaking as high as 103° to 105° F. Small bluish white spots surrounded by a reddish area may also appear on the inside of the mouth. The rash often starts on the face and neck, then spreads over the body.
