Qualcomm Challenges Nvidia, Intel With AI Chip for Data Centers

It's time to move up a notch says Qualcomm as they've recently announced new chipsets in the form of the Snapdragon 665, 730 and 730G. The chip maker says that the new chips are created to offer customers "exciting experiences" in gaming, AI and performance.

Qualcomm has another version of the Snapdragon 730, dedicated for gaming and is aptly named the Snapdragon 730G.

The Snapdragon 665 is a step up from its predecessor, Snapdragon 660, while the Snapdragon 730 succeeds the Snapdragon 710 and 712 processors.

The Snapdragon 665 mobile platform for smartphones is built using an 11nm FinFET process. The CPU features two big performance Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and six efficiency Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8Ghz.

It also features Qualcomm's Spectra 350 Image Signal Processor supports up to dual cameras up to 22MP, and a single camera up to 192MP.

Additionally, the chipmaker company has also announced a new gaming-focused processor - Snapdragon 730G, where G stands for gaming.

Made using the 8nm process, the Snapdragon 730 includes the Adreno 618 graphics processing unit (GPU) and a state-of-the-art graphics library that uses 20% less power than Open GL ES. Starting from the same base technical specifications as the Snapdragon 730, the Snapdragon 730G increases the maximum resolution of supported on-device displays from 2520x1080 to 3360x1440 while adding support for HDR gaming.

The Snapdragon 665 is also an octa-core processor.

Snapdragon 665 will be succeeding the much-popular Snapdragon 660. The four low-power Kryo 260 cores (based on Cortex-A53) are still clocked at 1.8GHz.

This chipset is paired with Adreno 610 GPU, Hexagon 686 DSP, Snapdragon X12 LTE Modem and Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 technology.

The company has used Adreno 618 GPU for graphical tasks. All of the new chipsets are stated to be available in commercial devices in mid-2019.

The company launched a special variant of Snapdragon 730 focused on gaming features.

The Snapdragon 730G has many similiarities with Snapdragon 730.

The Snapdragon X15 LTE modem inside the Snapdragon 730 chipset supports up to 800Mbps LTE Cat.

What's more, the 730G features technologies to support HDR gaming and helps in dealing with Wi-Fi related problems such as latency issues. The problem with this last claim is that the Snapdragon 710 only appeared in a handful of midrange phones from companies like Xiaomi-a huge brand in China, but one with nearly no presence within the United States. It has eight Kryo 260 cores (four performance, four efficiency) that can be clocked up to 2GHz. The Spectra 350 ISP allows recording of 4K HDR footage with "Portrait" mode, high-resolution depth sensing, MCTF video capture, HEIF file capture and playback. It also brings with it a new "Jank Reducer" feature, which should limit stuttering by up to 90 per cent in a 30fps game. Snapdragon 665 also supports aptX Adaptive Audio and Qualcomm Aqstic.

The camera support provided by the Snapdragon 665 offers support for up to 48 MP / up to 25 MP, MFNR, ZSL, 30 fps single camera, up to 16 MP, MFNR, ZSL, 30 fps dual camera with Hybrid Autofocus and Zero shutter lag.
