Authorities described the child's injuries as life-threatening and said witnesses gave the child first aid. The child was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital.

The police department is working with the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office crime lab to investigate the incident, and they are also working with the mall to determine if any surveillance video exists of the incident.

Witnesses said the child was his mum when he was snatched - being either thrown or pushed from the third floor in an apparently random attack.

A woman who works at a nearby store and who did not want to be identified said she heard loud screams, went outside the store and saw the boy hit the ground.

Potts said there is no relationship between the suspect and the child or the child's family.

Aranda's criminal record includes two convictions in 2015 for obstruction of the legal process/interfering with a peace officer, as well as convictions for fifth-degree assault, trespassing and damage to property.

'Additional information from witnesses indicated the 5-year-old might have been pushed or thrown, ' Bloomington Chief of Police Jeff Potts said.

The suspect, a 24-year-old man, was arrested on charges of attempted homicide at the mall's transit station and is now in police custody, according to the Bloomington Police Department.
