A drive-by shooting outside a nightclub in the Australian city of Melbourne inflicted "horrific injuries" that killed a security guard and wounded three men, police said on Sunday, but there was no suggestion yet that the attack was terror-related.

The incident took place at about 3.20 am Sunday at a nightclub near Little Chapel Street and Malvern Road.

10 News First confirmed a 37-year-old security guard from Narre Warren South suffered life-threatening injuries but has since died in hospital. One guard died in hospital, another man was in critical condition and two escaped life-threatening injuries.

That auto was later found burnt out in Wollert.

People are being told to avoid the area while police are urging anyone with video footage of the incident or information to contact them.

The Golden State Warriors close out the regular season at Memphis and are resting many of their players for the game. Through seven season with the organization, Davis made the playoffs just twice, but made six All-Star appearances.

Love Machine host Steve Yousif posted on Facebook: "Overwhelmed with all your calls and texts, nothing but love for you all".

Police are expected to investigate links to an outlaw bikie gang which has made extortion attempts on the nightclub, The Age reported.

Bloodstained clothing and bullet casings littered the street outside the entrance to the second-storey Love Machine nightclub early on Sunday.

"These things are still incredibly rare and there's nothing to indicate at the moment that this is part of a broader agenda", said Andrew Stamper of Victoria state police.

The Seven Network TV station said that a security guard at the club had no idea a shooting had happened and there was no panic inside the venue, which remained open following the shooting.

"An investigation is underway and the exact circumstances are still being established", a police spokesman said in a statement.
